In 1973, a group of like-minded Baptists from the then Rocky Mountain Conservative Baptist Association decided to plant Valley Baptist Church in Montrose, Colorado. We began meeting at Hillcrest Congregational Church but then moved to the Seventh Day Adventist Church allowing them to worship on Sunday mornings. In 1975, three acres (at the southwest corner of Highway 90 and Spring Creek Road) were donated to this church plant and construction of the church building began later that year. We celebrated our first service at this location on Easter morning 1975. As we continued to grow, the building was expanded in 1995, which doubled our seating capacity. Being a Conservative Baptist Church with a strong missionary DNA, they we began supporting two missionary families serving in Senegal, Africa. The Missions Ministry of our church continues to be a mainstay of our existence. There have been four Senior Pastors over our 50 Year History: Don Johns (1973-1981), Chuck Almond (1981 – 1984), John Cook (1984 – 1997), and Mike Lundberg (1997 – 2022). In 2014 our church was renamed Church on the Hill to better reflect our location and desire to be a light unto the Montrose Community. We still continue to be a part of the Conservative Baptist Movement, (now called Venture Church Network), and value working together with local churches and Christian organizations to advance God’s Kingdom.
